The client had asked the design team to provide a restaurant design that would be unique but not cliché. We focused on the fact that this was a neighborhood restaurant in America. Atmosphere wanted to create a fun comfortable space that would become a natural place for the locals to meet and dine. In order for it to be comfortable it had to be "real", to have its individual character without becoming a stage set.
The restaurant was laid out to avoid a "sea of tables" using screens to provide intimacy while focusing the layout on the sushi bar underneath a fascia of copper "scales". The screens are made of translucent fiberglass squares framed in wood aligning with wood baffles above. These are stained orange, to encourage appetite, according to Japanese custom. The screen required by Connecticut law to separate the bar from the restaurant is based on an Origami design for a Samurai helmet. Lighting is provided through custom pendants inspired by Japanese lanterns. The overall design is made up of these original objects coming from the design teams imagination inspired by their knowledge of Japan.
