The client requested Atmosphere to create a front door that would attract quests away from the kitchen door through which they typically entered the home. Their home is a large rambling house, typical of many old New England dwellings. It had been added to and remodeled frequently throughout its eighty-year life span. The resulting residence is a non-descript but pleasant, almost colonial, farmhouse style lacking a focal entrance. Ancillary to the primary design goal was the renovation of an upstairs bathroom connected to bedrooms through a tight hallway above the entrance. Opening this corridor to the entry hallway below enlarged both spaces, strengthening the transitional experience of the entry. The front door was transformed into a large archway glazed with leaded glass patterned after the tree branches outside. The entry door and portico are adorned with stained glass denoting their importance. Vine like wrought iron columns provide wispy sculptural support to the entry portico while fulfilling the clients request for an alternative to the traditionally heavy wood columns typically embellishing entryways. The new front door not only creates a portal into the home but reinforces the connection of the house to the site, particularly; the adjacent field stone terrace and large oak tree, beckoning guests while filtering the outside into the house, making even an overcast day bright and cheery.
